Our Story

Founded in 1998 on a narrow Collins Street alcove, The Melbourne Reader has blossomed into an essential chapter of the city’s literary narrative. What started as a 40 m² nook with second-hand shelves is now a vibrant, multi-level haven where Melburnians meet, mingle, and discover life-changing stories. We champion local voices, sustainable reading habits, and the simple magic that happens when pages turn in good company.

  • Over 40,000 carefully catalogued titles in stock
  • Curated pre-loved collection prevents 4 tonnes of paper waste every year
  • Monthly donations to Victorian literacy programs
